In the eCulture project we ported a dozen datasets of different cultural institutions to the Semantic Web. In this paper we share our experiences: we sketch the technical data conversion problem, describe the conversion rules that were needed, and the methods that we used to align terms to vocabularies. We wrap it up with the statistics that give some insight on practical conversion cost and its success rate.

In this article we describe a Semantic Web application for semantic annotation and search in large virtual collections of cultural-heritage objects, indexed with multiple vocabularies. During the annotation phase we harvest, enrich and align collection metadata and vocabularies. The semantic-search facilities support keyword-based queries of the graph (currently 20 M triples), resulting in semantically grouped result clusters, all representing potential semantic matches of the original query. We show two sample search scenario's. The annotation and search software is open source and is already being used by third parties. All software is based on established Web standards, in particular HTML/XML, CSS, RDF/OWL, SPARQL and JavaScript.

As the SemanticWeb gains momentum, so grows the interest in making knowledge kept in various repositories available. In this paper we describe a case study using a methodological approach for porting cultural repositories to the Semantic Web. The approach consists of thesaurus conversion, meta-data schema mapping, meta-data value mapping, and thesauri alignment. It is derived from our experience collected in a number of conversions we have performed for the E-Culture project, and in this paper we apply it to a collection of data about images related to book printing.

This paper describes ongoing work of a project aimed at exploiting Semantic Web techniques to support searching and annotating large cross-institutional digital-heritage collections. The project demonstrator contains multiple collections and multiple vocabularies. The architecture is fully based on Web standards. We show novel search and presentation techniques which make use of interoperability between the collections and between the vocabularies.

In this thesis we are interested in how automatic web-service configuration be performed on the Semantic Web. We explore three practical and fairly advanced web-service scenarios that happen to require an automatic web-based configuration technology to be realized. From these scenarios we derive a number of practical requirements to such a technology and find out that the Semantic Web provides a few building blocks for such a technology. The first block is the architecture and we extend the existing UPML approach to fit the requirements imposed by the scenarios. For the second block, the configuration algorithm, we realize that neither parametric design nor planning can be directly applied to this task. Accordingly, we develop a combination of those. We test it by implementing the web service scenarios to show that they, indeed, can be solved.
